What is NAP consistency?
NAP means name, address, and phone. Google and customers both get confused when those three do not match across your listing, website, and other directories.
Why matching details matter
If your Google profile says "Mike's Auto Repair" on Oak Street with one phone number, and your website says "Mikes Auto" on a different street with an old cell number, search systems have weaker proof you are the same place. People also call the wrong number or drive to the wrong door.
Common ways NAP drifts
- Suite numbers or "Ste" vs "Suite" written differently everywhere
- Old phone kept on the site after a new business line
- DBA vs legal name used inconsistently
- Moved locations years ago; Facebook or Yelp never updated
- Tracking numbers on ads that replace the main number on the site
A simple fix order
- Pick the official name, street address, and main phone you want customers to use.
- Update Google Business Profile first.
- Match the website header, footer, and contact page to the same three fields.
- Fix other profiles you still control (Facebook, directories you care about).
You do not need every obscure directory on day one. Start with Google and your own site.
